Early Treatment

At what age should a child have an orthodontic examination?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends most children should have an orthodontic screening by age 7. This allows Dr. Brian Cook to determine if orthodontic treatment will be required and the best time for the patient to be treated.

Many local dentists are trained to spot orthodontic issues early and may refer children to us before age 7.

Why are children evaluated at such an early age?

Early diagnosis and treatment can guide erupting teeth into a more favorable position, preserve space for permanent teeth, and reduce the likelihood of fracturing protruded front teeth.

Benefits of Early Treatment

If early treatment is indicated, Dr. Brian Cook can:

  • Guide Jaw Growth: Influence the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth.
  • Arch Regulation: Help regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches.
  • Create Space: Gain space for permanent teeth, potentially avoiding the need for extractions.
  • Prevent Complications: Reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth.
  • Address Habits: Correct thumb sucking and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems.

Early treatment simplifies future orthodontic care, ensuring a smoother process once all permanent teeth have erupted.

Does early treatment benefit all children?

Early treatment isn’t necessary for every child. Some orthodontic problems are best corrected during the teen years when all permanent teeth have erupted.

Treatment plans are personalized based on each child’s unique needs. Patients who are not ready for treatment are placed in our orthodontic supervisory program.

What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?

The orthodontic supervisory program monitors the eruptive pattern of permanent teeth for patients not yet ready for treatment. Early removal of baby teeth may correct poor erupted patterns and reduce future treatment time.

We update your general dentist on any recommendations and see patients on recall every 6-12 months to monitor progress.

Additional Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

  • Functional Improvements: Enhances bite function and teeth cleaning ability.
  • Prevents Wear: Reduces premature wear on teeth, increasing their longevity.
  • Enhances Smile: Besides aesthetics, it improves overall dental health and hygiene.

Will early treatment prevent the need for braces as an adolescent?

Early orthodontic intervention addresses significant issues early on, preventing more severe problems and simplifying future treatment. It initiates corrective measures before all permanent teeth have erupted, potentially reducing the need for extensive braces later.

Typically, a shortened Phase II treatment (full braces) during the teen years completes the alignment. However, further orthodontic adjustments may be unnecessary in some cases.

Regular Dental Visits During Treatment

Patients with braces need rigorous oral hygiene. To ensure optimal dental health during treatment, we recommend regular check-ups and cleanings with your family dentist every six months.
